What’s the draw?

benilla is a World of Warcraft 1.12.1 client written in Rust and Bevy. Its repository describes support for character creation, questing, professions, dungeons, raids and the original interface. It reads data from the player’s existing 1.12.1 installation and connects to a compatible server using that version’s protocol.

The project appeared in chasm’s October 1 showcase, alongside a skating demonstration. That distinction matters: benilla’s own README describes a faithful client and a foundation for forks, not skating as a stock feature. Chasm credits Kimmo and links the samwhosung repository. We keep the community demo separate from the features the base project actually documents.

The source builds on macOS, Linux and Windows, but there are no prebuilt downloads in the main project. You need an English 1.12.1 client’s data, a compatible server and the documented build tools. The repository explicitly excludes bundled Blizzard assets. We have not compiled or played it, and do not make claims about server legality or compatibility beyond the project’s stated requirements.
